As for the last two years I’m once again preparing for the half marathon this year. I believe I'm still figuring a lot of stuff out. I’m especially getting more and more into perfecting my diet. And let me tell you, it makes a HUGE difference what you eat during the training period as well as right before the big run. Just summarizing in the following what’s hot and what’s not.
Before the run: Water & Carbs
In the days before a long run I usually am going to be really diligent of my water consumption. It’s more than important to drink plenty of water! In addition, I ensure to eat lots and lots of carbs. I've discovered that carb-loading actually help to raise my energy level significantly.
Before a long run I usually eat a very basic and normal breakfast, nothing special. When I’m not hungry, I just go for a glass of soy milk. I discovered that fruits in the morning tend to lie to heavy in my stomach so I completely eliminated it from my breakfast plate. I do love toast with almond butter (I like this one). Doesn't that look delicious?
After the run
Post-run is where I often fight, to be completely honest with you. I've yet to determine the best thing to eat to help my body to recover as fast as possible. The biggest problems lie in my hunger. I tend to get really hungry after an 8 miles run. First hour after I’m home is completely fine, but several hours later I will find myself emptying the fridge like a hungry bear and controlled eating is not really the keyword here. I think this has something to do with why I feel so stiff and sore after a longer run. Apart from that I make an effort to drink water throughout the day's rest.
Supportive Shoes
I wanted to write a whole blog post about this topic, however, I didn’t find time to do it today, so I will just give a quick summary in this entry and come back to this topic another time. I’m currently looking for a new pair of running shoes as my old ones are really worn out. However, finding a good pair of shoes has been proven to be difficult for me. I suffered from plantar fasciitis in the past. Since then I’m very particular about the kind of shoes I’m wearing. They need to provide enough support and need to have motion control, be well cushioned and stabilizing. I found some pretty good reviews about Ravenna and Asics shoes for plantar fasciitis here. Apparently these are high quality shoes for plantar fasciitis with good arch support. The price seems to be fine, too. I used to wear Nike a lot, but it didn’t really help with my heel pain. After that I made the switch to Asics and I recovered a lot faster. If you have any good shoes for plantar fasciitis that you could recommend, let me know in the comment section! I would be very happy about any recommendations!
